A long time ago, turtles
were always friendly to Eagles and Hawks. One day, turtle said, "I
don't know what we'll eat today. Should we cook mosquitoes and dark
sauce for supper?" Hawk and Eagle rubbed their stomachs. Turtle
was the cook, and she had promised them the mosquito dish every Sunday.
That day was Sunday.
|

| Turtle opened the cupboard. "There's not
enough mosquitoes! Someone stole three cups of canned mosquitoes!"
screamed Turtle. This wasn't very exciting for Eagle. He had
eaten the mosquitoes, but Hawk didn't know. "What happened???" he
cried. "We must find the thief at once!" Eagle didn't seem so worried. |

| "Why don't we save the work till tomorrow morning?" asked Eagle in a calm
voice. "Besides, I'm hungry. Turtle!, squished frogs
with pudding please." Turtle didn't do it. He was just quite
frozen, staring into the empty bottles labelled 'mosquitoes'. "TTUURRRTTLLE!!!!",
trumpeted Hawk. "MAKE SQUISHED FROGS WITH PUDDING!!!!!!!!" |

| "YYYess sir!" said Turtle in a shaky voice. He wasn't so sure these
two creatures were very kind. He hid in one of the colored shells
used for bowls. |

| He crawled away under the shell. From then
on, Turtle always hid in her shell, frightened Eagle or Hawk might come
back to keep her. And that's why turtles hide in their shells. |
